Why Your Recovery Score Ignores Your Lifts

Many recovery scores use overnight signals without seeing the details of recorded lifting work. Here's what workout logs add to the training picture.

Many recovery scores start with sleep, HRV, and resting heart rate. Those signals can be useful, but they do not describe the sets, reps, and weight in a lifting session. Incredible does not display a Recovery score. It provides daily training context from sleep, vitals, and recorded training, including logged lifts.

How Most Recovery Scores Work

A generic recovery-score formula looks roughly like this:

Recovery Score = f(HRV, Resting Heart Rate, Sleep Quality, Sleep Duration)

Some products add wrist temperature or respiratory rate. The core inputs are usually collected passively overnight, which makes the score convenient and consistent. WHOOP Recovery, Bevel's Recovery score, and other competitor metrics each use their own methods and product language.

These overnight readings provide useful context, but they cannot reconstruct a barbell session. A wearable may record the session's duration and heart rate without knowing whether it contained squats, bench presses, or rest between heavy sets. Some competitors now include strength tools, but each product decides differently how that data affects its displayed metrics.

Why Lifting Is Easy to Miss

Endurance load can often be estimated from a continuous signal such as power, pace, or heart rate over time. Strength training is less continuous. Heart rate rises during a set, falls during rest, and may produce a modest session average even when the logged work was substantial.

A detailed strength log adds information that heart rate alone cannot provide:

  • the exercise performed;
  • completed sets and repetitions;
  • weight and set type; and
  • reported effort when available.

That information can support a model of recorded strength workout load. It still does not directly measure muscle damage, prove that a muscle has recovered, or establish a universal recovery time.

How Incredible Uses Recorded Lifts

Incredible brings together how you slept, overnight readings, recent training, and workouts recorded today. Your optional check-in adds personal context.

The visible breakdown is:

  • Sleep and overnight readings
  • Recent training
  • Today’s recorded workouts
  • Your check in

Incredible's built-in strength tracker records exercises, sets, repetitions, weight, set details, and effort. The app turns completed logged work into a strength-load estimate relative to recent non-zero strength sessions. Cardio workouts use their own load estimate from recorded workout duration and heart-rate intensity when that data is available.

Training Load combines those two sources:

Recorded workout load = recorded cardio load + recorded strength workout load

Movement outside a recorded workout remains separate. Steps, Apple Exercise Time, and elevated heart rate outside a recorded workout do not enter this shared training state. A recorded walk or hike can count when it is saved as a workout and produces recorded workout load.

One Recorded-Workout State, Several Views

The same raw daily workout load feeds the app's related training metrics:

Training Load shows today's recorded cardio and strength workout load through a curved 0–100 display. That display is not a percentage or a physiological maximum.

Recent training is a faster weighted average of raw daily workout load. It changes at a seven-day rate, but it is not a simple total or average of exactly seven calendar days.

Fitness is the slower weighted average, displayed through its own 0–100 curve. Fitness is training built over time from recorded workouts. It is not complete physiological fitness, general health, or everyday capacity.

Training Balance compares the faster recent-training average with the slower Fitness base. It describes a relationship in recorded workout history; it does not predict injury or overtraining.

Sleep and overnight readings appear alongside recent training above the Fitness base and workouts recorded today. Your optional check-in remains personal context.

This shared source matters because a logged lift does not disappear into a generic heart-rate event. It contributes as recorded strength workout load without becoming a separate Recovery product or muscle-recovery surface.

What This Context Does Not Claim

This daily training context does not:

  • prove that your body or a muscle has recovered;
  • predict injury, illness, performance, or overtraining;
  • prescribe a workout or decide whether exercise is safe;
  • estimate overall energy or daily health; or
  • use Movement, daytime Stress, or Blood Oxygen as contributors.

Blood Oxygen can still appear as a separate displayed vital.

The data boundary matters too. A complete day with no qualifying recorded workout can contribute zero load. Missing, stale, partial, or still-refining workout coverage is unavailable, not zero. Incomplete workout logging can therefore make the recorded training picture incomplete.

What the Research Can and Cannot Tell Us

Research suggests that autonomic readings and markers associated with resistance-training recovery can change on different timelines. Studies such as Chen et al. (2019), Flatt et al. (2018), and Howatson and van Someren (2008) are part of the broader discussion about HRV, muscle function, and training monitoring.

That research does not validate Incredible's daily training context as a measure of exact tissue recovery. Incredible's strength-load formula, faster and slower averaging rates, and training-cost calculation are product choices.

The Bottom Line

A generic Recovery score can be useful while still knowing little about the work performed in the gym. Incredible takes a different approach: it provides daily training context from sleep, vitals, and recorded training, while recorded cardio and strength workouts share one training-load source.

The distinction is simple. Overnight readings describe one part of the context. Recorded workouts describe another. Incredible brings them together, shows your optional check-in as personal context, and leaves the training decision with you.
